Cantil-Sakauye Courthouse!

Today's DJ reports New Sacramento courthouse set to open this fall -- After years of planning and construction, the Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Sacramento County Courthouse is set to open this fall. The 18-story, 53-courtroom facility will replace the aging Gordon D. Schaber Courthouse, offering modern security features, videoconferencing in every courtroom, and improved amenities for jurors, attorneys, and staff.

  • After more than a decade of effort and nearly five years of construction, the new Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye Sacramento County Courthouse will open this fall. The 18-story, 53-courtroom courthouse will have over half a million square feet of space.
  • It is named for the former California chief justice, a Sacramento native who served on the superior and appellate courts in Sacramento. Cantil-Sakauye stepped down at the beginning of 2023 after she decided not to run for another term. Months later, the Judicial Council voted unanimously to waive a rule stating courthouses could not be named for living people.
