RIP Justice Agliano (1932-2022)

The Sixth District Court of Appeal is saddened to report that it lost a beloved former presiding justice last week. Justice Nat A. Agliano passed away peacefully at the age of 90.

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the only child of Sicilian immigrants, Justice Agliano moved to the Monterey Peninsula when he was young. Justice Agliano attended Monterey Peninsula College from 1949-1951, completing his education at UC Berkeley. He graduated from Hastings College of Law in 1959.

After working for the Attorney General’s Office, he returned to private practice on the Monterey Peninsula in 1963. He had a long and distinguished judicial career as a judge in Monterey County before his appointment to the Sixth District Court of Appeal at its inception. He served on this court as an associate justice and as its presiding justice for 8 years.

After his retirement in 1992, Justice Agliano continued to serve the legal community as an arbitrator at JAMS and as a professor at the Monterey College of Law. In addition to his many honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Monterey County Bar Association, which has been renamed in his honor, Justice Agliano was known at the court as an exceedingly kind, thoughtful, and brilliant jurist. He was instrumental in establishing the foundational principles and organizational structures of the Sixth District Court of Appeal. He will be greatly missed.
