New Justices Confirmed

Commission Confirms Appointments to Courts of Appeal

Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye, Chair of the Commission on Judicial Appointments, announced that the commission today confirmed the following appointments by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. to the Courts of Appeal Second Appellate District and Fourth Appellate District:
  • Judge Martin J. Tangeman, as Associate Justice of the Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District, Division Six (Ventura). He will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Paul H. Coffee.

  • Judge Marsha G. Slough, as Associate Justice of the Court of Appeal, Fourth Appellate District, Division Two (Riverside). She will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Betty A. Richli.

The appointments were approved by a unanimous vote at the public hearings held today in the Supreme Court Courtroom, Ronald Reagan State Office Building, 300 South Spring Street, Third Floor, North Tower, Los Angeles.
(AG Kamala Harris did not attend. She was attending a funeral related to this crash.)

So, one of many funny moments at the hearing, was Justice Gilbert (speaking on behalf of Judge Tangeman) pointing out that the program incorrectly listed him as "Arthur L. Gilbert." As far as anyone knows, Justice Gilbert has no middle initial. State Bar records, however, do show that there once was a California lawyer named "Arthur L. Gilbert" -- but he was admitted in 1921 and is now deceased. His bar number was 34 (!). 2/6's PJ Arthur Gilbert was admitted in 1964 and his bar number is 34622.
