The Recorder profiles Judge Hurwitz; Justice Beds' latest

Today's Recorder profiles 9th Circuit judge Andrew Hurwitz (video here), who says that oral argument is "fun" and that it is "important" to him because "a lot of time you just learn things in oral argument because you've got this massive record." He explained that he asks questions to make sure he understands the case, not "with the intention to trap somebody." Judge Hurwitz does not use OSCAR for clerk applications, essentially taking the position that applicants who want to work for him should take the time to apply on paper and spend the postage.
"[Y]ou take your cases as you get them. I'm very sympathetic to appellate lawyers ....
Sometimes you get a stinker."
Today's Recorder also features Justice Beds' latest column, "Do You have a License for that Rabbit."
"I'm a sucker for animals. ...
I'd swerve my car across a six-lane highway to keep from hitting a squirrel."

Kudos to the Recorder for now allowing open access to its articles!

Over at the DJ, there's an article about Williams v. Chino Valley Independent Fire District from 4/2, but the piece (written by a "trial lawyer") never mentions which division of the 4th issued the opinion and repeatedly refers to it having come from the Court of Appeals. That's like nails on a chalkboard...

Today's DJ also has a short piece about Alka Sagar's appointment as a U.S. Magistrate Judge (C.D.Cal.), calling her "the first Indian-American federal judge in the nation." Um, I can think of two Indian-American federal magistrate judges just in California...
