J.Chaney to ADRS / more federal judges coming?

Today's DJ reports Retired appellate justice Victoria Chaney joins ADR Services Inc. -- Chaney served for nearly a decade as a judge in the Los Angeles County court's Complex Litigation Division.

The DJ also has Senate passes bill to add 21 judges in California -- The unusual unanimous approval of the bill in the Senate sent the proposal for more federal judges to the House of Representatives.

The Judicial Understaffing Delays Getting Emergencies Solved (JUDGES) Act was introduced last September by Senators Alex Padilla, D-Calif., Todd Young, R-Ind., Chris Coons, D-Del., and James Lankford, R-Okla. ...If enacted, the legislation would create nine additional judgeships in the Central District, four in the Eastern District, six in the Northern District, and two in the Southern District.

The Judicial Conference of the United States recommended in a report last year that Congress create 66 new judgeships throughout the nation, including two positions with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Padilla's news release said the JUDGES Act would comply with the report by adding the recommended judgeships every two years over the next three presidential terms.

The last major expansion of federal judgeships was in 1990 when Congress established 11 additional circuit court judgeships and 74 district court judgeships. If passed, the JUDGES Act would be the first legislation to create more federal judgeships in more than two decades.
