Chief cleared; Law school applicants up

Law360 has 9th Circ. Chief Judge Cleared Of Judicial Misconduct Claims

The Judicial Council of the Ninth Circuit on Friday cleared its chief judge of judicial misconduct claims alleging she failed to timely investigate a Los Angeles judge's decision to have a lawyer handcuffed and detained during contempt proceedings, finding the allegations were unfounded. In a six-page opinion, U.S. Circuit Court Judge Kim McLane Wardlaw, who was tasked with investigating the matter, dismissed the judicial misconduct allegations against the chief judge, who was not specifically identified. However, the opinion noted that the allegations were raised in a complaint that primarily cited an editorial published in the Los Angeles-based legal newspaper Metropolitan News-Enterprise on May 31, which named Ninth Circuit Chief Judge Mary Murguia.

Reuters has Law school applicants rose nearly 6% this year

The number of applicants was up 5.7% over 2023, according to final figures from the Law School Admission Council. In all, 64,912 aspiring lawyers applied for a spot this fall — making it the second-largest applicant pool of the past five years. Only 2021’s pool of 71,035 was larger, a gain attributed to the pandemic. In all, 3,478 more people sought a seat at the 197 American Bar Association-accredited law schools this year than in 2023.
