"Gilbert" courtroom dedication Dec. 2

Today's DJ has:

  •  Division 6 courtroom of 2nd District to be named in honor of presiding justice -- Justice Arthur Gilbert has been on the court since 1982.
  • In his trademark wry style, Gilbert said of the invitation to the courtroom dedication ceremony: “Love to have you come but I know it’s a schlep, so if you can’t make it, I understand. But I won’t forget it.” The courtroom dedication ceremony is scheduled for noon on Dec. 2. The court is at 200 E. Santa Clara Street in Ventura. Anyone wishing to attend should email patricia.silva@jud.ca.gov.

  • Senate Democrats expected to quickly fill judicial vacancies
the Senate has already confirmed six judges appointed by Biden to replace 9th Circuit judges appointed by Democratic presidents. A seventh Biden nominee to the appellate court, University of Montana professor Anthony D. Johnstone, is expected to be confirmed during the lame duck session to replace 9th Circuit Judge Sidney R. Thomas, an appointee of President Bill Clinton. ... There are only three judges remaining on the 9th Circuit who were appointed by President Bill Clinton: Johnnie B. Rawlinson, 69, who already has openly discussed taking senior status this year but wanted a specific former clerk to replace her; Ronald M. Gould, 76; and Kim McLane Wardlaw, 68. ... Trump bolstered the Republican contingent on the 9th Circuit between 2017 and 2021, adding 10 judges. When Biden took office, the court had 16 judges appointed by Democrats and 13 picked by Republicans. That 16-13 partisan breakdown hasn’t changed since then, and most political observers do not expect much of a shift during the next two years because Republican appointees are unlikely to take senior status.
