CJA hearings this morning & more

CJA has hearings this morning

• 9 a.m.—Judge Stacy E. Boulware Eurie, as associate justice of the Third Appellate District (Sacramento)

• 10 a.m. (*estimated time, immediately follows 9 a.m. hearing)—Judge Hernaldo J. Baltodano, as associate justice of the Second Appellate District, Division Six (Ventura).

Both were (of course!) confirmed as reported here; Recorder article here.

Today's DJ has Judge Karnow displaying brilliance and humor in Stochastic Gradient Descent.

And today's DJ has Justice Hoffstadt's Slicing the Atom, discussing Vega v. Tekoh, 142 S. Ct. 2095 (2022), quoting Zig Ziglar and ending with the groaner: "will it be the case that what happened in Vega stays in Vega?"

CLA's 2022 Annual Meeting will be Sept. 15-17 in San Diego. On Friday, Sept. 16, from 2:15 to 3:35 there will an Appellate Perspectives program: A Conversation with Supreme Court Justice Guerrero and 4/1 Justices Dato and Buchanan (moderated by Kevin Green and Johanna Schiavoni, members of CLA's Litigation Section's Committee on Appellate Courts).

The DJ's special 40-Under-40 report includes Horvitz & Levy associate Christopher Hu, noting his clerkships with Judge Wardlaw and Justice Liu, and his Cal Supreme Court work (5 merits cases pending and his first oral argument back in June).

For a nice opening paragraph to a copyright opinion, see Judge Nguyen's opinion here.
