The DJ reports Appellate justice favored clear opinions and good food: Retired 3d District Court of Appeal Justice Richard M. Sims III, known for expressing his convictions and his enjoyment of a good meal with colleagues, died Dec. 17. (bio here; interview here.) His father was Justice Richard M. Sims Jr. (1st Dist. Div. 1)
- In 1982, Jerry Brown elevated Sims to the court of appeal. (Brown's father appointed Sims' father to the Court of Appeal.) Sims retired from the bench in 2010.
- Sims helped launch an appellate mediation program for his district.
