Tuesday was the first time the Senate confirmed a California trial judge since Oct. 5, 2015 — a remarkable drought for the nation's most populous state, which has 61 federal district judgeships. Seats have remained open for as long as six years, sending caseloads soaring and prompting the Central District's chief judge to send an unusual plea for reinforcements, warning that a vacancy crisis posed a threat to justice.
