Hot off the press: Federal Judicial Caseload Statistics 2018
Filings in the 12 regional courts of appeals fell 16 percent to 49,363 (down 9,588 appeals) in 2018. Most of this decrease stemmed from fewer filings of original proceedings and miscellaneous applications, which offset increases in U.S. prisoner petitions, other U.S. civil appeals, and bankruptcy appeals. Civil appeals declined by 145 cases to 27,926.
