“State of the Court”

We will be kicking off the start of the new
term with our traditional State of the Court meeting. Justice Elwood Lui,
Administrative Presiding Justice, and Joseph Lane, Clerk and Executive
Officer of the Court, will be addressing our section on the state of the Second
District. Danny Potter who will be replacing Joseph after his
retirement will also join us.

“Arbitration: A Favored Process?”

This program will begin with an overview of the
arbitration process, including the differences between federal and state laws
governing arbitration. The panel will explore the reasons for using
arbitration, the perceived risk of potential bias, the limited circumstances
under which arbitrators’ decisions make it to the appellate courts, and the
impact of arbitration, if any, on the development of the law. Finally,
the panel will react to the recent focus by the media, legislatures, and other
organizations on the use of arbitration.

Trial Court Decisions without Waiving Appeal.”

injunction or writ, and still appeal it? Under what circumstances would you want
to comply? How do you do it without waiving appeal? The rules can
be complex, and the pitfalls many. Hear from appellate practitioners and
a Justice what to do, what not to do, and what to avoid.
