CASHW-First launches

We are excited to announce the launch of the Civil Appellate Self-Help Workshop (CASHW) in the First District Court of Appeal. The first workshop is on Wednesday, October 1. CASHW-First is a free, monthly, 2-hour, self-help workshop for self-represented litigants with civil appeals in the First District. It is modeled on the successful CASHW that has been operating in the Fourth District for over a decade.

The First and Fourth District CASHW teams are coordinating to let you know about this volunteer opportunity to put your appellate skills to use. The workshops are volunteer-driven. During the first hour of the workshop, an experienced volunteer presents an overview of the appellate process (slide deck provided). During the second hour of the workshop, volunteers meet with self-represented litigants to answer questions and provide legal information about the appellate process. Volunteers do not give legal advice or form attorney-client relationships.
Some of the benefits of volunteering include:

  • Limited time commitment (1-2 hours/month)
  • Training provided (approx. 1 hour; MCLE forthcoming)
  • Malpractice insurance provided
  • Help people who cannot afford a lawyer and need help navigating the appellate process; give back to the community
  • Earn pro bono hours reportable to the State Bar

We hope you will consider signing up to volunteer at some of the upcoming workshops. The upcoming dates are:

  • October 1, 4-6 p.m.
  • October 21, 4-6 p.m.
  • November 5, 4-6 p.m.
  • November 18, 4-6 p.m.
