2/5's PJ Rubin retires

Presiding Justice Laurence D. Rubin Retires February 29, 2024

In 2001, former Governor Gray Davis appointed Justice Laurence Rubin to the Second District Court of Appeal. In 2018, then-Governor Jerry Brown appointed him to succeed Justice Paul Turner as Presiding Justice of Division Five. Before joining the bench, Presiding Justice Rubin was a trial judge on the Los Angeles Superior Court and Santa Monica Municipal Court for 19 years. He served on a number of judicial committees and has been a member of the California Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee on the Code of Judicial Ethics. Presiding Justice Rubin chaired the California Judges Association’s Committee on Judicial Ethics and was a Judicial Council Trial Court Coordination Advisory Committee member. For many years, he has been active in judicial and legal education, teaching ethics, technology, and appellate practice to judges and attorneys throughout the state. Presiding Justice Rubin has been a dedicated judicial officer of this court. His leadership and integrity will be greatly missed.
