RIP Justice Hollenhorst (1946-2024)

4/2's Justice Thomas Hollenhorst passed away last month. The Appellate Bar always appreciated his leadership regarding tentative opinions and his participation in bar activities! Below are excerpts the Riverside County Bar Association's notice:   

Justice Hollenhorst began working for the Riverside County District Attorney's office as a Deputy District Attorney in 1972, promoted to Assistant District Attorney in 1977, and was Acting District Attorney in 1981. He served on the Riverside Municipal Court from 1981 to 1985, and was Presiding Judge of the Municipal Court in 1984. In 1985, he was elevated to the Superior Court, serving from 1985-1988 prior to his elevation to the Fourth District Court of Appeal.Justice Hollenhorst, along with his son Judge Tim Hollenhorst, who currently sits in the Hall of Justice, were the first parent/child set of judges in the history of Riverside County.

Justice Hollenhorst was a member of the RCBA since 1973.He served as Secretary on the Board of Directors in 1980-1981, until his appointment to the bench.He received the RCBA E. Aurora Hughes Meritorious Award for Service in 2013.RCBA past president Robyn Lewis shared these thoughts: "Our legal community lost a true legend when Justice Hollenhorst passed away. His love of the law, his stalwart commitment to making the legal profession better and to challenging lawyers to always be better was undisputed. His devotion and commitment to his family and his pride in his children was exemplary. His legacy will continue in each of us who were inspired by him and who learned from him. He will be deeply missed but his contributions to our community will always be remembered."
