DJ profiles Justice Poochigian

Today's DJ has Unique Perspective: 5th District Court of Appeal Justice Charles Poochigian served in all 3 branches of government

  • He was a top adviser to Gov. George Deukmejian and judicial appointments secretary for Gov. Pete Wilson. He was elected to the Assembly from 1994 to 1998 and the state Senate from 1998 to 2006. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed him to the Court of Appeal in 2009.
  • Poochigian said his years in the fast-paced, high-pressure environment of the Legislature gives him a perspective most judges lack on the concepts of “legislative history” and “legislative intent.”
  • Poochigian’s father was a farmer in Fresno, while his mother’s family came from Chicago, where his grandfather worked in the city’s famed stockyards. His grandmother survived the Armenian Genocide in Turkey after Scandinavian missionaries found her wandering the countryside with other orphans; she grew up in an orphanage in Lebanon before coming to the United States.

  • The State Bar of California announced Wednesday that it had disbarred 68 attorneys in 2022, which represents a decrease from 2021 and 2020, according to data the bar provided.
  • The bar’s announcement about 2022 enforcement disclosed the 68 disbarments, as well as suspension or probation for 85 other attorneys.
