DJ profiles Justice Jenkins

Today's DJ has Justice Martin Jenkins Completes a Year on his 5th Court -- Justice Jenkins is known for thoughtfulness and care

  • Jenkins joined a municipal court in Alameda County in 1989 and three years later Gov. George Deukmejian appointed him to the Superior Court. He then became a federal judge, followed by his tenure, as a 1st District Court of Appeal justice.
  • A year ago, he was confirmed at the first openly gay justice, and the third Black man, to serve on the California Supreme Court.
  • Jenkins, who turned 68 this week, has spent the majority of his adult life as a judge. He’s logged almost 32 years on five courts. He also spent almost two years as judicial appointments secretary to Gov. Gavin Newsom.
  • “You get to determine what your docket looks like,” Jenkins said. “I have really come to enjoy the Wednesday conferences, the contributions, insights and perspectives my colleagues have that come to bear on whether we take a case. It’s never heated, but smart people have different perspectives.”
