Fletcher goes senior

Today's DJ reports 9th Circuit Judge William Fletcher will take senior status: The decisions by Fletcher and other judges won't change the makeup of the court, which is nearly evenly split between appointees of Democratic and Republican presidents.

In a telephone interview Tuesday, Fletcher — noting he will turn 76 next month and saying he would like to spend more time with his wife and five grandchildren — said he wants to “make room for some new generation people.” “It’s been an enormous honor to sit on this court for 22 years and I hope to continue in the tradition as a senior judge,” he added.

Judge William Fletcher is the fourth Ninth Circuit judge to announce a retirement this year, following Judges Richard A. Paez earlier this month, Marsha S. Berzon in April and Susan P. Graber in February.
