DJ profiles 6th DCA APJ Greenwood

In Covering a Lot of Ground, today's DJ profiles the 6th DCA's APJ, subtitled Administrative Presiding Justice Mary Greenwood has worked with prosecutors, defense lawyers and superior courts to clear an inherited backlog despite being short-handed. (The last DJ profile of then-Judge Greenwood was in June 2013.)

Justice Mary J. Greenwood inherited a short-handed court, a large backlog and a host of issues to address when she took over the 6th District Court of Appeal in 2018. Then, just as she was getting a handle on the backlog in her role as administrative presiding justice, the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

"People have the idea that on the Court of Appeal, we think a lot of esoteric thoughts," she said .... "But we are covering a lot of ground and a lot of issues at one time."

"The two most important qualities of an appellate justice are collegiality and humility" .... "You really need to listen to what your colleagues offer and do it with an open mind and an open heart."

This week's DJ also had the Top Women Lawyers 2021 insert, which includes a good number of appellate names like Laura Brill, Theane Evangelis, Mira Hashmall, Lisa Perrochet, and M.C. Sungaila, and Anne Voigts.

Also Chambers USA has released its 2021 rankings (including for California Appellate practice).

And the Recorder's On Appeals column is Avoiding the Dreaded Deadline Demon for California Appellate Writs by CALG's Sharon Baumgold.
