2020 Cal Court Stats are out!

2020 Court Statistics Report: Statewide Caseload Trends

Supreme Court Table 1 shows that the odds of getting review granted are 3% overall, 2% for civil cases (that's 1% for civil appeals and 2% for civil writs); criminal is 4% overall, with criminal writs at 9%

Think that's bad? The number of rehearings granted is zero -- which is the same figure every year for 2010 to 2019 except for 2015, when there was 1. (See p. 21.)

Data for Figure 23 (p. 23) shows there were 22 depublished opinions in FY2019, up two from the year before, four from the year before that, and seven from the year before that. So an upward trend, of sorts.

Courts of Appeal Figure 33 (p. 36) shows that for civil appeals, 2/6 is the fastest court (median of 441 days), followed by 4/1 (471 days), 2/8 (509 days), 2/5 (516 days), and 2/4 and 1/5 are tied at 524 days (2/2 is right behind at 5/27). The statewide figure is 589 days. The slowest in civil appeals are the 6th (830 days) and the 3d (829 days).

Figures 22-27 (p. 34) shows that for civil appeals the affirmance rate is at 79% (last year was 81%, the year before was 79%) and the reversal rate is 18% (up from 16% last year and 17% the year before). (The 4% dismissal figure is the same for the past three years).

Statewide, only 9 percent of Court of Appeal majority opinions were published. The First District published 11% whereas the 5th was at 4%. Looking just at civil appeals, the statewide rate is 15% with the 3d at 20% (next, the 1st and 6th tie at 17%) and the 2d and 5th down at 13%
