More on Justice Thomas

Clarence Thomas official SCOTUS portrait.jpgArticles about Justice Thomas asking questions at the recent telephonic oral arguments are rampant. One interesting one is the Wall St. Journal's Justice Thomas Finds his Voice, which notes:

  • J. Thomas asked questions of every advocate in the four teleconferenced arguments;
  • Before the telephonic arguments, he spoke in only 32 arguments of approximately 2400 since his appointment in 1991.
  • In the last 29 years, his questions took up 26 minutes; but last week he spoke for approximately 7.5 minutes.
  • He once went a decade without speaking during oral argument (2006-2016).
On the topic of remote oral arguments, here's the latest from the 7th Circuit:
All cases scheduled for oral argument through June 30, 2020, will be argued by counsel either telephonically or by Zoom Video Communications.  The Clerk's Office will contact counsel with remote argument instructions for their specific case. The courtroom will be closed to the public.  The Court, on a temporary basis, will live stream the audio from oral arguments to YouTube.  Arguments will also be recorded and posted on the courts website.  If all parties agree among themselves to waive oral argument, they may jointly file a motion with the court seeking permission to do so.
