Your State Bar Fees going up!

As expected, the Gov. approves increased State Bar licensing fees. (Signing statement here.) See Lawyer Licensing Fees Will Rise for First Time in 20 Years:
  • The legislation will raise an active attorney’s 2020 state bar bill to $544, a 26% increase. The added charges will help pay for more bar staffing, a salary increase for bar employees and changes in retirees’ health care coverage.
  • Inactive attorneys will be charged $183 in 2020 under the legislation.
  • Attorneys with annual gross incomes of less than $60,478 can qualify for a 25% discount on their 2020 fees under terms of the new law.
Language Usage Reminder: You are no longer a "member" of the State Bar, you are a "licensee." And you no longer pay State Bar "Dues," you pay a "Licensing Fee." This is because "membership" and "dues" relate to voluntary organizations, whereas "licensing fees" are mandatory.
