CJA Award to former CSC Justices

Today's DJ has: Judges Association, Judicial Council honor judicial officers:
  • Three Supreme Court justices ousted by California voters in 1986 are being honored Friday by the California Judges Association with the President's Award For Outstanding Service to the California Judiciary. ... The late Chief Justice Rose Bird, plus Justices Joseph Grodin and Cruz Reynoso were removed from the bench by overwhelming votes against their retention after a campaign alleging they did not adhere to the state Constitution, particularly regarding the death penalty.
  • [Also]: the Judicial Council of California on Thursday announced this year's recipients of its Distinguished Service Award. ... The recipients are 2nd District of Appeal, Division 7 Presiding Justice Dennis M. Perluss and Fresno County Superior Court Judge Hilary A. Chittick. As co-chair of the Tribal Court-State Court Forum, Perluss "helped strengthen relationships between local, state and tribal justice institutions" and ensured tribal court restraining orders in domestic violence cases were enforced, the Judicial Council said in a news release. He also created an expedited jury trial program to quickly resolve smaller civil cases. Chittick "helped create new court models that offer treatment and prevention to offenders instead of imprisonment or fines ... and helped drive the development of a smartphone app that provides real-time drug treatment options," the council statement said.
