Nationwide in the 21st century, more and more individuals find themselves involved in the court system, but without the means of obtaining effective representation.
In California, nearly 4.5 million parties each year come to court without an attorney.  About 75% of all civil filings have at least one unrepresented party, and that number exceeds 90% in family law cases.  Many of these litigants end up in the appellate courts, where being without a lawyer is even harder and more daunting than in the trial courts.  Overwhelmingly, the reason parties appear without a lawyer is that they just can’t afford one.
Learn what appellate courts, lawyers, and law schools throughout the country and specifically in California and Los Angeles County are doing to ensure meaningful access to justice at the appellate level.  Learn as well what ethical duties appellate lawyers have to further that endeavor, and learn how you can apply your appellate skills in the fulfillment of those duties.
Panelists:
Hon. Lisa Jaskol, Los Angeles Superior Court
Jeremy B. Rosen, Esq., Horvitz & Levy LLP
Hon. Laurie Zelon, California Court of Appeal, Second Appellate District
Tyna Thall Orren, Esq., Orren & Orren (moderator)
