Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye gave her first State of the Judiciary address to the Legislature yesterday.
In short: As an independent branch of the government, our court system serves 38 million Californians (10 million court filings this year!) on less than 3% of the state budget. Cutting our budget 24% since 2008 has affected our ability to serve the public, but we are resolved to maintain access to justice. Adequate funding is needed. The Chief has reached out to judges across the state to seek their input and ensure transparency and accountability.
